Valuing and managing veteran trees: a three day advanced course for trainers, Hereford
Location: Hedley Lodge, Hereford
A three-day advanced course aimed at those who would like to share their own knowledge and experience of veteran trees with colleagues, employees, volunteers and community groups. It will equip attendees with the skills, confidence and resources to be able to deliver the ATF’s one-day course on ‘Valuing and Managing Veteran Trees’.
This course was developed as part of the VETree project (a European project across five countries, see www.vetree.eu for details.
Training will be delivered through a combination of presentations, group exercises and field visits with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss.
This three day course will focus on providing participants with sufficient information and experience to deliver a Valuing and managing veteran trees: a one day training course.
When you have completed this course you should be able to do the following:
- Give a definition of a veteran tree.
- Explain the biological principles relating to old trees including: Root systems; Why trees live so long; Natural processes; Habitat development.
- Undertake a survey of a veteran tree.
- Prepare a simple management plan for a veteran tree.
- Assess if a population of trees is sustainable.
A certificate of attendance is provided upon completion of the course.
Residential delegates can arrive from 5pm on Tuesday 3 July.
Day 1 10:00 – 16:30: What are veteran trees? How do you recognise them? The biodiversity and heritage values associated with veteran trees. Field visit with surveying and assessment exercises. The aging process and decay. Optional evening excursion.
Day 2 9.00 – 16:30 (plus evening): Learning theory and teaching techniques. Management of veteran trees. Pruning techniques. Management plans for veteran trees. Field visit to look at the management of veteran trees. Veteran trees and risk.
Day 3 9.00 – 15.30: Review of the content of the basic veteran tree management course. Group teaching presentations and feedback. Fungi and decay. The importance of roots and veteran trees. Populations of veteran trees and their sustainability. Protection, grants and legislation. Evaluation forms.
Delivery of the one-day ‘Valuing and Managing Veteran Trees’ course
It is hoped that delegates will go on to deliver the one day course to others such as colleagues, employees, volunteers and community groups. Resources for running this course will be provided to all delegates. Those who do go on to deliver the one-day course can choose whether or not to charge trainees. If you use the VETree training materials commercially we will ask you to consider making a donation to the Ancient Tree Forum (suggested amount £10 per course delegate).
Who should attend?
Those wanting to expand their knowledge of veteran tree management or who plan to teach the one-day ‘Valuing and Managing Veteran Trees’ course to others.
It is not essential to have completed the one-day ‘Valuing and Managing Veteran Trees’ course, however some knowledge of veteran trees is useful.
£575 per person; this includes accommodation for three nights (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) as well as all meals.
£420 per person, includes attendance of course and lunches.
