Valuing and managing veteran trees: a one day training course, Surrey

Location: Astead Common, Surrey

by Helen Read

Ashtead Common

Ancient and other veteran trees are a highly prized part of the UK landscape. However, they are vulnerable to decline and loss through neglect, lack of understanding and poor management. This one day course will focus on how to assess these trees for their heritage, biodiversity and other values to society, and to provide guidance on managing the ageing tree and its root system to improve its prospects for health and longevity.

The training is designed for anyone who has an interest in veteran trees and their management and does not require prior knowledge. It is suitable for people who are responsible for managing areas with veteran trees, and for anyone who owns them or has a keen interest.

The course is a mix of indoor and outdoor activities and is intended to be interactive and participatory.  It includes topics such as the aging process, the value of veteran trees for biodiversity and heritage, the importance of roots and the management of veteran trees and sites with veteran trees. The course was developed in five countries within the VETree project and has been fully tested.  You will receive handouts covering the course material and a certificate of attendance.

Cost: £130 per person. You can pay online with debit card, credit card, or through a Paypal account, by clicking the ‘Book now’ button

Course timings: The course will start at 9.30 and end at 16.30.

Venue: Ashtead Estate Office, Woodfield Road, Ashtead, Surrey, KT21 2DU.
Ashtead Common is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation and is remarkable for its population of ancient oak pollards.  The course will be held in a room in the Estate Office which is situated on the edge of Ashtead Common and within a short walk of Ashtead railway station.

Refreshments: Tea and coffee will be available but please bring your own packed lunch (there are shops within walking distance).  If the weather is nice we can eat lunch on the common.
