ATF Wessex visit to Southwick Country Park, Wiltshire

Location: Southwick Country Park, Trowbridge

Come and join Richard Murphy, Wiltshire Council’s tree and woodland officer, and the ATF’s training officer Jim Mulholland (former Wiltshire Council tree officer and woodland officer) for a guided walk around Southwick Country Park.

The park is home to a number of veteran trees, the majority being lapsed oak pollards. In the 1990s this land was planned to become a golf course and existing hedgerows were planted to create wider wooded areas. Twenty years later, the site is owned by the county council and the planted trees are beginning to shade the veteran trees.

During the walk, Richard and Jim will talk about how the council started to clear the competition from around the veteran trees with limited funding, involving local volunteers. They will also talk about how visitors to the park were engaged and local attitudes changed.

Terrain is level, but walking boots or wellies are recommended due to a number of muddy areas.

Booking Information

Please email Jim Mulholland at training@ancienttreeforum.co.uk to book a place and for details of the meeting place.
