Native Black Poplar at Llangarron, Ross on Wye

Location: Upperfields Farm (Little Gaerfields), Llangarron, Ross on Wye, Hereford HR9 6PQ

An opportunity for people, both local and from from further afield, to come along to discuss and learn about veteran trees and their management, with particular reference to hybrid  black poplars.

This is clearly a very old tree for this species, growing on the farm of Vernon and Sheila Jones, at Upperfields Farm, near Llangarron, Ross on Wye.

They are very keen to preserve it, but it’s had no attention for many years and now carries some quite large, strongly leaning branches growing from the very large and very hollow bole. To avoid the risk of branches  breaking and possibly tearing out from the bole away some careful crown reduction work has been organised in coordination with a local firm of Arb. Association approved contractors, who have offered their services free.

Tony Norman, a Herefordshire Tree Warden who has done much to promote the cause of trees in general and the native poplar in particular, will talk about them and their propagation and cultivation; he hopes to bring along some rooted cuttings (both male and female) for distribution. If time and circumstances permit, there may also be some discussion of introducing resistant cultivars of elm into the countryside, another of Tony’s special interests.
All are welcome, but note that wellies and waterproofs are strongly advised!  Start at 11am.
