Field day for arborists at Knepp
Location: Knepp Estate, Horsham, Sussex
Fifteen years ago the Knepp Estate decided to abandon conventional farming, and began a process of rewilding the entire estate. It has now become internationally renowned for its wildlife and biodiversity and for its visionary approach to conservation. Ted Green MBE, the founder of the Ancient Tree Forum, is running this field day at the estate, for ‘thinking arborists’.
Subjects for discussion will include the following topics:
- Removing and relocating dead wood in the crown of an ancient oak tree (a unique tree which has 4 red data book fungi growing on it) – a field session to be led by Ted, with a practical demonstration by Reg Harris and arborists from Urban Forestry (Bury St Edmunds) Ltd
- The benefits of mulching in relation to old trees – field session with Jamie Simpson, arborist at Knepp.
- The creation of new pollards – examples and field visit to a 10 year old experimental site
- Tree hay as a product of the new pollards – demonstration and feeding of cattle by Ted (subject to availability)
Timings: 10am- 3pm
Refreshments: Tea and coffee will be provided but participants will need to bring their own lunch
