A lack of trees for the future

There appears to be a growing imbalance between the loss of mature and ancient, open crowned trees and the regeneration of new trees to replace them.

Young trees are the ancient trees of the future, and we need mature trees, or those with veteran features, to provide habitat-continuity when today’s ancient trees die. Solutions to this problem could include natural regeneration, planting under some circumstances and creating veteran features.
