Hedges are linear barriers, many of which have prehistoric origins. Often they were the landscape reference points on which boundaries could be formalised. In other situations, such as deer parks, hedges, ditches and walls were created to mark and enforce boundaries.

Important hedgerows are protected by the Hedgerow Regulations 1997. Contact your Local Authority for further information about protected hedges in your area.
