Chirk Castle has over 480 acres of estate parkland with plenty of veteran trees set in this old deer park, and a section of Offa’s Dyke. The estate is located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The parkland has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its importance as a habitat for rare invertebrates, lesser horseshoe bats and grassland fungi. It is also of special interest for being one of the best examples of ancient wood pasture and parkland in Wales.

The most famous tree here is the Great Oak at the Gates of the Dead, which is just below the castle
