196 trees ancient and veteran trees have been recorded at Kingston Lacy, including 82 oak pollards.  The trees on the stunning beech avenue (pictured) were planted either side of a newly built road, which was created as a  toll road. They money went to the landowner William John Bankes, who apparently gave the avenue to his mother as a gift. There were 365 trees on one side of the road, and 366 on the other side, one for every day of the year, and an extra one for leap years.
