Location: Near Cobham, Kent

Region: London & the South East

Grid Ref: TQ6868

Owner / Manager: National Trust

Access:

Cobham Wood is a lapsed wood pasture which had reverted to woodland and is in the process of restoration. Many of the ancient pollards were encased in woodland requiring immediate haloing to allow access to light. Cobham provides an excellent opportunity to see wood pasture restoration in progress and also to see some stunning old trees.

There is a yew tree in Loose churchyard near Maidstone which is said to be 1,500 years old. There is a certificate on it to that effect signed by the Archbishop of Canterbury (amongst others).

No one knows how old yew trees can be other than by conjecture. The opinion of the archbishop is no better on this question than any other.
